Visiting a client last week and discussing a mini brochure it struck me that I needed to be bossy.
(Alright, I’m bossy all the time, but not usually with those paying the bills!)
The mini brochure had been carefully thought out, the concept for the cover artwork had been painstakingly researched and the text written and rechecked by members of all departments… but there was something missing.
The brochure was informative but it didn’t tell the reader what to do next, once they had finished reading it.
This is a vital ingredient of any piece of marketing material you send out. It’s not enough to only inform your audience about what you do. You also need to explain how they buy it, contact you or how to find out more if you want to convert them into buyers. That’s why it’s called a ‘call to action’. If you don’t start telling your customers what to do next you could easily lose them as they try to decide what method to use to contact you: phone, fax, email or web?
The other advantage of telling your audience what action to take next is that you can also spell out what they can expect when they decide to make contact. If your staff are well trained and friendly over the phone then tell your customers that on your marketing materials, the same goes for your e-commerce website if it is easy to use (and it should be). Perhaps you can offer them a free consultation, gift or a special offer if they get in touch now. Your offer can help you tell your audience what to expect from the action they need to take next.
So, be a bit bossy, add a call to action to your next marketing material and tell your audience what to do next!
