When a valid SSL Certificate is applied to your website it securely encrypts the data that passes between your website and your visitors’ browsers. Meaning that should a hacker intercept your website traffic they cannot see the information being transferred, so for example they would not be able to see your username or password when you logged into your WordPress site.
Even if you do not consider that your website traffic is at risk of interception, there is still the issue of public perception.
Would you gain a competitive advantage if your site is securely encrypted over a competitor’s that is not. In recent versions of Google’s Chrome web browser the word “Secure” appears with the green padlock alongside your website address if your website has a valid SSL Certificate.
